The People’s Fridge – Whitby

Take what you need – share what you can.

The People’s Fridge is a community fridge based at Flowergate Hall in Whitby. It’s here to help reduce food waste, support local people and share good food with anyone who needs it – no questions asked.

Whether you need a bit of extra support this week, or you have food to spare, everyone is welcome to use the fridge.

What is a Community Fridge?

A community fridge is a simple idea with a big impact. It’s a space where surplus food – from individuals, shops, allotments or food projects – can be shared with anyone in the community.

The People’s Fridge is stocked with fresh items like fruit, vegetables, bread and pantry staples when supplies are available. Everything is free to take, and there is no need to sign up or explain.

Opening Times

The People’s Fridge is open during the following hours:

Monday, Tuesday,Wednesday and Friday – 11.00am to 1.00pm
(Please note: the fridge is only open when we have food available)

The fridge is located in the entrance foyer at Flowergate Hall, and is clearly signposted and easy to access.

We will open Christmas Eve 2025 at 6pm at The Common Room, 1 The Archway, off Skinner Street.

How It Works

  • Take what you need – no forms, no referrals, no judgment
  • Donate if you can – unopened items and fresh produce are always welcome
  • Please follow the guidance on the fridge about what can and cannot be donated

Why It Matters

The People’s Fridge helps tackle two things at once: food waste and food insecurity. It’s a small, practical way we can support one another and make sure good food doesn’t go to waste.

It’s about dignity, community, and simple acts of kindness.
